This hardy tree has delicious edible nuts and fern-like leaves.  It is a fast growing, high branched native species.  Its timber is very valuable. It prefers rich, moist soils but it will tolerate drier sites where growth may be slowed. It should be grown in full sunlight and is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Black Walnuts are highly tolerant of urban pollution and can be used within city environments.
